Africa Simply the Best

Established in 2015 by Serge Aimé Coulibaly to spot new dance talent, the Simply the Best choreography competition was initially organised in Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso before opening up to the entire African continent in 2019. Renamed Africa Simply the Best, its jury has chosen the three best contemporary dance solos from the fourteen on the shortlist. The three winners of the competition received professional coaching before going on tour to present their respective pieces. With Le Départ, Zora Snake from Cameroon sets in motion a pivotal moment in life, the moment of the spark before a reconstruction. A raw performance based on a text uttered to speak out against the unfair system of our societies. A qui le tour ? explores the torments and spasms of a body in mourning after the loss of a loved one. Agathe Djokam from Cameroon interprets the stages of this difficult process including shock, anger, memories, depression, acceptance and rebirth. In his piece entitled Corps en mutation Charlemagne Kevin Kabore from Burkina Faso reflects on the diversity of the human being. Through the use of ashes, which he uses to delimit space and as a tool for purification and protection, he symbolises a bridge between the world of the living and the afterlife.
